Anxiety is a state of uneasiness, worry, or fear about a situation with an uncertain outcome which has been recognized as a prevalent issue among surgical patients, and may negatively affect postoperative recovery. The study aim to assess theimpact of perioperative nursing assessment round on anxiety of elective surgeries at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, Ilorin. A quasi-experimental design was employed using 92 adult patients scheduled for elective surgeries. Participants were allocated to the control and treatment group (N=46). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed demographic characteristics, anxiety levels and satisfaction with preoperative education. With the aid of the SPSS verison 27, data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests, chi-square tests, and correlation, with significance set at p < 0.05. Findings of the study shows that majority of the participants were female (68.5%) and had tertiary education (47.8%). Preoperative anxiety was high, with over 63% of the participants indicating to be either very anxious or extremely anxious. The mean preoperative anxiety score in the treatment group was 4.28, which reduced to 3.54 postoperatively, showing a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). Also, mean difference of 1.09 (p < 0.05) was also observed in the postoperative anxiety of the control versus the treatment group. The study concluded that perioperative nursing assessment rounds effectively reduced preoperative anxiety and enhanced patients’ psychological readiness for surgery. The results indicated reduction in anxiety associated in surgical patients indicating a positive impact of perioperative education. Nurses should be adequately trained in patient education, psychological assessment, and anxiety management.
